Golf has very old origins which are still 100% unknown to this day. However it is thought to have started in the Kingdom of Fife, located on the eastern coast of Scotland during the 15th century. Using the natural landscapes of rabbit runs, sand dunes and tracks and a stick or simple club, players would hit a pebble around the course.
King James II outlawed golf in 1457 after a quick rise to popularity because Scots were playing the game instead of preparing for the English invasion. Avid fans continued to ignore the ruling even though it was reinforced in 1470 and 1491. The ban was finally lifted in 1502 by King James IV (James I of England) with the Treaty of Glasgow. King James IV even played the sport himself, starting a trend of royal golfing. King Charles I of England and Mary Queen of Scots in France were next in line to pick up a club. Mary even helped coin the name caddie. It refers to French Military members called cadets.
Duncan Forbes created the first rules of the game at the Gentleman Golfers Clun at Leith in 1744. By 1895 when the first ladies club was formed; gold clubs had advanced. They were commonly made of fruit tree or beech wood with heads made of hand-forged iron. Balls were made by tightly compressing feathers, wrapping them in horse hid and stitching it all together. The shaft of the clubs usually contained hazel or ash.
Since 1895, golf has continued to gain popularity and fandom. Alexander Funicello is an avid golf fan and both watches and plays the game whenever he can.
