A pulmonologist is a doctor who has specialized knowledge in diagnosing and treating lung conditions and diseases. Pulmonology is classified as a subspecialty of internal medicine, and because of the wide range of problems that they can encounter in the human respiratory system, knowledge of internal medicine and other specialties is necessary for a doctor to become certified in pulmonology.
Before a physician is allowed to take the Internal Medicine board certification exam, he or she must satisfactorily complete medical school. Once they have become certified in internal medicine they may be trained in pulmonary medicine. They must take a minimum of two years of full-time graduate training in pulmonary disease, with a strong focus on molecular biology, pulmonary physiology and pulmonary immunology. Half of this time must be spent in clinical training in diagnosis and management.
Physicians who want pulmonary medicine certification must also acquire clinical experience and become knowledgeable about pulmonary diseases and disorders. Such disorders include cancer, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. Once training has been completed, the candidate can take the board certification exam, and upon passing receives board certification in pulmonary medicine.
